Girl Scouts of Michigan

Had a blast cleaning the Girl Scouts of Michigan office in Lansing, MI this week. Special thanks for all the delicious cookies! The girls saved over 10 lives by choosing us and will save 10 more each time we clean their office. It's truly amazing how many great new opportunities like this are happening now that we're giving back so much more. Moments like this only reaffirm that people truly support our joint mission with the Rotary Club of Ft. Lauderdale to provide clean drinking water to millions in need across the world. We saved over 50 lives last month with your help and will likely meet or exceed our monthly goal again!

As a token of our appreciation, use code DGM10 for extra 10% off any deals, programs or promotions.

Again, thank you all so much for your support!

The Patel Family

#FatherFriday

Our father this Friday is extra special because its my dad. In world filled with so many fatherless households, he's hand down the most amazing role model, cool father and sweet husband.  For the past 6 six years, he reported directly to the Governor of Michigan as CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation in Lansing, MI. His primary job was managing billions of dollars to help get the economy booming in Michigan again by working with different organizations and firms all across the world. During his tenure, he launched a new pilot Economic Development program called Community Ventures that achieved national recognition for its effectiveness versus previous initiatives. The goal of Community Ventures was to help the structurally unemployed, those heavily reliant on government assistance, ex-convicts, disabled and more. The program was launched in Saginaw, Pontiac, Flint and Detroit with a $10 million grant from State of Michigan to try and help around 3000 people train to become self-sufficient. Currently the program has 68% retention rate one year after participants have been trained and employed by CV partner firms. This is significantly higher than virtually any other Economic Development Program in the country at the time. Now, he's working on spreading Community Ventures across the country and within Michigan to help fixed some of the most blight ridden areas.

In addition to being an amazing business mind, he's an amazing father as well. He's raised 3 boys, two of which who have college degrees and my youngest little brother will get his eventually. My parents have been married almost 30 years and love each other more with every passing day. He grew up pretty poor but very happy with 7 brothers and sisters in Flint, Michigan. He worked in the plant at Flint during the summers and played football for Saginaw Vally State University to pay his way through college where he earned an accounting degree. Also, somehow managed to serve as student body president his last year on campus. He eventually made it to Central Michigan where he attained his Master in Administration, met my mother and the rest is really history from there.

I've always thought my dad was so cool. He's been to almost every country in the world, met everybody who's actually somebody and could text people many of us just hope to meet one day lol. My dad has run various departments of organizations, he ran multimillion dollar companies before he got into Economic Development and he's even launched quasi-public institutions that could last forever with the help of government. He's the reason that me and so many other young black youth he's helped believe we can do anything we put our minds too. This is why every Friday we'll be honoring good black fathers like my father to help fix one of biggest problems facing our community. We hope these positive images will battle all the negativity we see in the media and encourage others to step up and be fathers or fatherly figures to our youth. Show your support by sharing this message and tagging good fathers of any race you know and tagging us in your photos.

Chad Milton

Meet Chad Milton. Please go support my best friend. He's a new father that just started his first semester of medical school. Winter is fast approaching and his car just took a turn for the worst. Chad was the first black father featured in our #‎FatherFriday posts and he has a truly amazing story that you must read. If you make a non-anonymous donation over $15, we'll give you extra 10% off any current deals, programs or promotions. We just posted link to his GoFundMe on our website. Thank you for your support!

Marcus James Cavlerly

This is Marcus. I've known him for a long time and he's always displayed the benefits of living an all around genuinely fun life, while cherishing all the good laughs along the way. He only bleeds green and white because he played football for Michigan State and graduated with a degree in Political Science. We spent high school spring breaks together at baseball camp in Florida every year. There were great times shared on the field during practices and games. Marcus was always the life of the dugout. Up big, down big or close game, he always had a timely impersonation of every coach in that situation. I'll never forget his massive home runs either! Sadly, Marcus was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma over a year ago. His constant treatments keep him out of work. Please support his go fund me page! If you make a non-anonymous donation over $15, we'll give you extra 10% off any current deals, programs or promotions.

#FatherFriday

Meet Jordan Brown.

He's the proud father of 2 beautiful children that mean more to him than anything else in the world. We always hear about black fathers leaving...I'm so proud to say my cousin uprooted himself from his comfort zone in Michigan to Dallas, Texas to be involved in his children's lives on a daily basis no matter what the cost. Jordan and the mother of his children are no longer together but he refuses to miss any opportunity he gets to spend with his children. He's put his own dreams on hold as he works two jobs to support JB Jr and his daughter Kamora. I'm so inspired by my cousins refusal to allow his kids to not have their dad around because he knows how important his involvement is to their development as well as his own. Very few dads can say they actually dropped everything to move across the country to be with their children which is exactly why we're honoring him today. Every Friday we'll be honoring good black fathers like my cousin to help fix one of biggest problems facing our community. We hope these positive images will battle all the negativity we see in the media and encourage others to step up and be fathers or fatherly figures to our youth. Show your support by tagging good fathers of any race you know and tagging us in your photos.

Travis

Every Friday we'll be posting photos of good black fathers to help fix one of biggest problems facing our community. We hope these positive images will battle all the negativity we see in the media and encourage others to step up and be fathers or fatherly figures to our youth. Show your support by tagging good fathers of any race you know and tagging us in your photos. This Friday we have a little bit of a twist for you because we realized that our ultimate goal was to help the children that suffer from not having a fatherly figure in their lives. Today, we’ll be honoring a true hero that fought for his country over 8.5 years in the US Army before being honorably and medically separated after an injury during his Iraq deployment. His family relocated from Tennessee to Michigan shortly after his return to start a new life. This God fearing man is the head of household to a beautiful multiracial family that he puts before everything else. He’s been married to his wife Jennifer for over 4 years now and has 4 beautiful bi-racial children of which two aren’t biological his own. His wife told us that everyone loves Travis because he’s the type of guy thats just gets along with people but whenever others question his ability to be a good father due to his race, he quickly proclaims “THEY ARE MY CHILDREN AND I AM THEIR FATHER!”. We want people to know his story because there are so very few men of his caliber in this world which is exactly why were honoring him today. Thank you for your service and for being the most amazing role model to your children and others.

One Month Later

Well folks it's been one month since we formed strategic partnership with LifeStraw and Rotary Club of Ft. Lauderdale to change our overall mission by including theirs as well. Our goal was to raise $250 and we were only $25 short of hitting our goal on time!!! Plus we'll actually hit $250 mark if nobody reschedules today and weather permitted lol ‪#‎MichiganProblems‬ Today morning we'll be mailing first check for $250 that'll easily help save at least 25-50 people's lives. We took a huge risk one month ago and decided to essentially cut our entire marketing budget to enable this partnership going into our slow season. Everyday it becomes more clear that it was the best decision we've ever made.

Thank you all so much for your help and generosity!

November Goal: $255 because if we're going to be realistic, we live in the Midwest and who knows what could happen next.

PS can't wait till you see the beautiful twist we have for tomorrow's ‪#‎FatherFriday‬ post.

Throwback Thursday

This Throwback Thursday post is extra special because it's about my youngest little brother, Austin. He's a recent graduate of Huron High School and currently enrolled at Washtenaw Community College. He's 19 years old, fit, handsome and too smart for his own good ladies 😉 I'm so unbelievably thankful and proud of all his hard work since he joined DGM this year. Unfortunately for him, he became my unofficial assistant all summer during crazy busy times. He helped recruit, hire and train new staff members in Metro Detroit and Ann Arbor. He coordinated schedules, consistently provided positive feedback and great ideas on so many different things from marketing to quality control. Ann Arbor/Detroit is the heart of this business and he was always there for me this summer when I needed him most. I've always been extra hard on him because Ive seen how much he's capable of but I often forget he's just 19 😓 Lord knows I made all kinds of mistakes and had no clue what I wanted to do when I was his age lol 😅 My little brother and I are now closer than ever before thanks to all his hard work and dedication to our mission. Your my best friend, I love you so much little brother and have never been more proud of you in my life. Please show him some  folks!

Raphael

Every Friday we'll be posting photos of good black fathers to help fix one of biggest problems facing our community. Show your support by tagging good fathers of any race you know and tagging us in your photos. Our fourth amazing father is another one of my best friends, Raphael Downes. This God fearing young man has a truly inspiring story. Several years ago he became the proud father of the adorable little girl pictured above. His daughter Leilani was conceived in love but her mother left a year after she was born. We always hear about black fathers leaving but this young man battled heartbreak and homelessness while simultaneously raising his daughter as a single father. Today, he's a hardworking husband to his beautiful wife Chantal and father to the newest addition to the family, baby RJ. Raphael is also known as Rafa'el, local positive hip hop artist in Lansing, Michigan. He uses his music to illustrate that hip hop can be used to preach positive messages that everyone can enjoy. Thank you for being such an amazing role model to other black youth in so many different ways. Please show him some love on his Facebook page and support him by following him on Soundcloud: Rafa'el

PS The song below is about his daughter Leilani.

In the winter of early 1970's, My father relocated his family from Jamaica all the way up to Michigan. He proudly raised two young boys to become college educated and successful first generation Americans while chasing his own pursuit of the American dream. He's been married to my mother for over 40 years now and epitomizes the definition of a hard working black man. Thank you for being such an amazing role model.

Veteran's Day

Veterans Day is fast approaching so we decided to take a moment beforehand to thank our newest Chicago staff member. Chris was a Engineer in the U.S. Army for 5 years where he built roads, buildings and primarily worked with heavy equipment such as bull dozers, cranes and graders. He currently works two jobs while studying Political Science at the University of Chicago in Illinois and plans to attend law school after finishing undergrad. Chris hopes to get into politics one day and will very likely succeed. His older brother Nicholas helped us launch our first franchise outside of Michigan nearly two years ago. Over the past year, Chris has become an integral part of Chicago operations and consistently exceeds our expectations. We're so honored and grateful to have him as apart of our team. Thank you for your service, your dedication to our mission and for being a true role model to all young black men out there.
